Google Ads conversion tag checker

Check if your Google Ads conversion tag (AW- ID) is on the page, then confirm conversions record with Tag Assistant and the Google Ads status column.

Scans the page's HTML in seconds. It also reports every other tracking script it finds.

about Google Ads conversion tag

Why it breaks quietly.

The Google Ads conversion tag uses the Google tag with an AW- account ID, plus a conversion event with a send_to label for each conversion action. It tells Google Ads which clicks led to a sale or lead, which drives Smart Bidding.

When it breaks, campaigns keep spending. Bidding just optimizes on fewer or wrong conversions, and the first sign is often a status like Unverified or No recent conversions that nobody was watching.

what the free scan checks

✓

Whether Google Ads conversion tag is in the page

The scan fetches the page's HTML and matches the vendor's script URL and install snippet.

✓

How exposed the page is to blockers

A server-side readiness grade: whether tags load from domains blocklists target, and whether conversions have a server-side path.

It reads the HTML, so tags injected later (inside GTM, for example) don't show up, and it can't see events fire. That's what verification is for.

common failures

How Google Ads conversion tag goes dark.

✗

The conversion label does not match the action

The send_to value includes the AW- ID and a conversion label. Copy the wrong label, or one from a deleted action, and the hit goes nowhere useful.

✗

The conversion event fires on every page load

Placing the conversion snippet on a thank-you page that people refresh or revisit records the same conversion again. Counting settings and a transaction ID help limit duplicates.

✗

Click IDs are lost before conversion

Google Ads attributes using the gclid on the landing URL. Redirects that strip query strings, or checkouts on another domain without the conversion linker, drop it.

✗

Enhanced conversions are switched on but send no data

Enhanced conversions need hashed customer data such as email at conversion time. If the tag cannot find it, the setting is on and nothing extra is matched.

by hand

Check it yourself, step by step.

  1. 1

In Google Ads, go to Goals, then Conversions, and check the status of each action. Unverified or No recent conversions means the tag is not reporting.

  2. 2

Connect Google Tag Assistant to your site, complete a test conversion and confirm the conversion event fires once with the right AW- ID and label.

  3. 3

Land on your site with a test gclid in the URL and walk through checkout to confirm the parameter survives redirects and domain changes.

  4. 4

In Chrome DevTools, filter the Network tab for googleadservices or your AW- ID during a conversion to see the request go out.

questions

Asked and answered.

Can this check tell me if Google Ads conversions are firing?+

No. It reads the page's HTML and can only see whether an AW- ID is present in the served code. It cannot see conversion tags injected by GTM, or confirm a conversion was recorded. TracerKit's Verification tier watches real fires and alerts when a tag goes silent.

Why does my conversion action say Unverified?+

Google Ads has not received a hit for that action yet. The tag may be missing, firing with the wrong label, or only on a page nobody has reached since setup.

Does the GA4 tag cover Google Ads conversions?+

They share gtag.js, but they are separate configurations. You can import GA4 key events into Google Ads instead, or run the Ads conversion tag directly. Doing both for the same action counts it twice.
